It’s not too difficult to feel a little sorry for Jonny today.
The Wolves player, on loan for the season from Atletico Madrid, got his first start for Spain and it just so happened to be in a match which will go down on record for all the wrong Spanish reasons.
Spanish newspaper AS report there was ‘chaos in defence’, and it was impressive how easily England cut their opponents to shreds during the first half.
Gareth Southgate’s men put in a very good performance, but perhaps the biggest difference between this and some other performances which had suggested they could end very well, such as Croatia at the World Cup, was taking those first half chances.
Jonny was one of six Spain players to receive a blank mark from Marca. He was one of seven to receive the same from AS. Mundo Deportivo gave the Wolves player a single star, and Sport rated him as 5/10… one of Spain’s better performers.
The player himself has been quoted by AS as saying: “We knew that they could hurt us on the counter attack and they did it in three different ways.”
Sergio Ramos explained similar, saying Spain’s mistakes were punished with goals, which meant the whole outlook of the game changed.
