A few hours after Nottingham Forest announced the signing of Martin O’Neill to be their new manager, Portuguese outlet O Jogo claims that Ivo Vieira had been considered for the job as well.
Although the Marítimo boss had been linked to the Championship side in the past few days, this is the first time the Portuguese press has direct claims about any contacts.
O Jogo says that Forest owner Evangelos Marinakis had given orders to approach Vieira’s representatives.
The reason Marinakis was interested in Vieira was ‘the excellent references’ he’d received about the manager, and the good season that Marítimo has been having. O Jogo also points out that Vieira’s contract with his club expires at the end of the season.
With so many Premier League and Championship sides looking for Portuguese managers, this is a name we should soon see again in the rumour mill, along with Vitória Guimarães’ Luís Castro, who has recently rejected an offer from Reading.
