Last summer, Chelsea made a surprising move by signing Diego Moreira straight from Benfica’s youth ranks.

In order to give him more experience, the Blues sent him to Lyon, where he’s having a loan spell until the end of the season.

Moreira is today featured in an interview with Belgian outlet DH, and talked about the current process he’s going through. He claims that having the pre-season with Chelsea meant a lot to him.

“I had a pretty crazy start to the summer. This is a goal that I achieved by signing for this great club and I have already been able to learn a lot there. In particular, I was able to participate in the preseason and the trip to the United States in contact with all these great players,” said Moreira.

The player also had some compliments to send towards Chelsea manager Mauricio Pochettino.

“He is close to his players, gives a lot of good advice and really breathes football. I also stayed in contact with several players. I had time to build some links, especially with French speakers like Christopher Nkunku and Malo Gusto. Then, I obviously met Romeo Lavia.”

As Diego Moreira is just having his first professional season, he claims he still doesn’t have a clear idea of what’s happening to him in the summer, as he could be returned to Chelsea’s squad or continue to be loaned out.

“I think I have progressed this year but I’m nowhere yet. I have to continue to work very hard to improve. And at the end of the season? I don’t have to think about it now. I am focused on Lyon and we will see what happens in June.”

Since joining Lyon, Moreira has eight appearances, and is still to get any goals or assists for the club, while he fights for a place in their team. Back at Chelsea, the winger has a contract running until 2028.
