Once Cristiano Ronaldo got diagnosed with Coronavirus, there were some doubts in Portugal about how the national team would behave without him.
Liverpool’s Diogo Jota was the one who replaced the country’s biggest star in the match against Sweden last night, and the change went probably better than expected.
With two goals and one assist, the 23-year-old was the man of the match in the 3-1 win, and his performance is highlighted by several media outlets today.
As Jota in Portuguese means the letter J, there are several puns used by local newspapers. Jornal de Notícias writes ‘CR Jota’ on their front page, while Record writes ‘Jota Zone’, and O Jogo highlights the ‘Jota Formula’, claiming the Swedish team is still looking for him.
Speaking to the local media after the game, Jota claimed he’s at his peak, pointing out how big was his transfer to Liverpool.
“I think so. It’s the highest moment of my career. I took a big step forward, played the second game as a starter in the national team and the important thing is this, to establish myself more and more as an option, to give my best and grow.”
Diogo Jota joined Liverpool on a £40m move from Wolverhampton Wanderers this summer, and following this international break, the Reds now have a new reason to be excited with their new signing.
