AZ Alkmaar midfielder Jordy Clasie has insisted he would turn down a move to Manchester City as he no longer has the ambition to play for such clubs.

The midfielder was speaking ahead of his side’s clash with Aston Villa in the Europa League this evening when he was asked about potential transfers.

The 32-year-old is now very much in the latter stages of his career after spending most of that playing in the Netherlands for Feyenoord, Excelsior and now Alkmaar.

He did spent time outside of his homeland, joining Southampton in a €15m deal in July 2015 before eventually leaving on loan for Club Brugge in 2017 and then Feyenoord in 2018 before a permanent exit a year later.

His time in England is not one he looks back on too fondly, having managed just two goals and one assist in 49 games for the Saints in a spell that was largely unforgettable.

Clasie had arrived in England as a replacement for Morgan Schneiderlin and had been considered a highly sought-after player at the time.

It never worked out, though, and he has not interest in trying again, even if Manchester City were to offer him the opportunity.

“I no longer have the ambition to ever take another step, but many boys within our selection do,” he said.

“(If a Premier League side asked) I say no. Seriously. Manchester City? That would be a nice step… No, without fooling around: those kinds of clubs won’t come to me anymore. I’m also at a certain age.

“The fact that I feel so appreciated and that I am having such a good time here counts a lot. My family is also very happy now. I am in the right place. Never say never, but that ambition is not there now.”
