Chelsea’s Carney Chukwuemeka has been on loan at Borussia Dortmund since the winter market.

The Bundesliga club have secured a buying option and on April 7th, Kicker reported they have decided to exercise the €30m purchase clause.

Last week, Sky Deutschland said the buying option is set at €35m but BVB hope to bring the price down. They also stated Dortmund are optimistic of retaining the midfielder after this season.

Dortmund manager Niko Kovač has discussed the Chelsea owned player and Der Westen have relayed his comments.

Enzo Maresca left the 21-year-old out of his plans for the Premier League and used him in the UEFA conference League and the EFL Cup this season.

The limited role with the Blues convinced the Chelsea man to join the German club and he played 286 minutes from 10 games so far.

“Carney is a very good footballer who has now found himself in a situation he’s never had before. He didn’t get as many minutes as he did here at Chelsea. Like every player, he needed a certain amount of time to get going. And then he got what everyone wanted here: the playing time he needed,” he said.

Chukwuemeka has struggled with injuries and fitness concerns since joining BVB. Their manager is aware they wouldn’t have managed to sign if he was a regular at Chelsea.

“It’s normal to have ups and downs. You have to give a player like that the opportunity. If he had already been a regular at Chelsea, we would never have gotten him,” Kovač explained.

Despite earlier claims stating that Dortmund are optimistic of retaining Chukwuemeka, Kovač now admits he isn’t sure.

“We’ll discuss that after the season. We’re very happy to have him. He’s already shown his abilities several times. I personally like him a lot,” he added.

“But what happens in the summer depends on many factors. Where will we end up at the end of the season? What does Chelsea say? What’s possible for us?”
