After spending nearly eight years at Celtic, Mikael Lustig left the Scottish Premiership champions and signed for Gent on a free transfer in June.
Neil Lennon was keen on retaining the defender and there were even suggestions the Bhoys had offered him a new deal. However, the Sweden international ended his association with Celtic at the end of last season.
The right-back won 16 trophies, which includes eight league titles in a row, during his time at Celtic Park and got on well with the club’s fans.
Het Laatste Nieuws interviewed the 32-year-old and asked him whether he completely feels at home in Gent because they have not seen his off-field antics that he used to do when at Celtic.
“Hopefully those crazy days are behind me. But we will see, you never know if we will win a prize with AA Gent,” he said.
When discussing about ‘witty remarks and dry humour’ towards his teammates, Lustig explains how spending time at Celtic has helped him.
“It is also an easy dressing room. From day one I make jokes with the boys. A bit of British humour. (Laughs) I learned a lot in those eight years at Celtic,” the player stressed.
Lustig also has an additional role at the Belgian club, which he explained in detail.
“Peter Verbeke (Gent’s sports director) immediately told me that I was supposed to take the young players under my arm. I didn’t have to think long about that,” the Swede explained.
“(grins) I may get older, but I still have qualities that can help a team on and off the field. The main thing is to show on the field what is needed to have a good season.
“That starts already in training, because if you want to win over the weekend, you have to do that in training. We have a lot of young players, but they are so open to that they will all become top if they continue like this.”
