Manchester United’s Alvaro Carreras is today highlighted by the Portuguese media, where there’s some expectation Benfica will sign him on a permanent deal.
Newspaper O Jogo points out that the Spaniard is set to get the chance to prove himself to the Eagles, since Alexander Bah is now injured, and they invited former Benfica player João Manuel Pinto to talk about the situation.
“He’s a player with quality and a hunger for the game, he’s shown it. I like him, he needs to play more, but he’s very useful and I think he’ll take his chance. With playing time he’ll acquire rhythm and confidence, as was the case with Grimaldo. You have to remember that he also had a period of adaptation and that his best season was his last one.”
O Jogo recalls that Benfica only need to pay Manchester United €6m for the purchase, and Pinto insists this is a crucial time for Carreras to show he’s worth the investment, but it’s something he feels they should do.
As newspaper Jornal de Notícias also shares a story on Carreras, they claim that Benfica are yet to take a decision on the operation. It’s said that even though there’s an ‘internal will’ at the club to buy him, they haven’t made a final decision yet, partly because it’s not guaranteed that manager Roger Schmidt will stay for another season.
Now since the fullback’s signing was completely planned by the football department, only getting approval from the coach, perhaps his potential departure won’t have that much weight on the club’s decision.
