Huddersfield Town signed Philip Billing from Danish club Esbjerg in 2013 and after spending a year with the English club’s academy, the midfielder was promoted to the first team.
The 22-year-old was born in Denmark and has represented them at U19 and U21 level in the past, but his Nigerian roots allowed the African nation to approach him and convince him to join the Super Eagles.
During an interview with Complete Sport Nigeria, Gernot Rohr, the manager of Nigeria revealed that one of his assistants met the Terriers player in England and asked him about the possibility switching allegiances.
After Rohr’s latest comments, Danish publication BT got in touch with David Wagner’s midfielder to get his thoughts on whether he will represent Nigeria or Denmark on the international stage.
“It says I’ve talked with them. But I have not personally had contact with the Nigerian national team at all,” Billing said.
“I know my agents have said that Nigeria has approached them. There’s not much in it … at most if I want to play for the Nigerian national team, so I think it could be possible. But that’s not something I’m thinking about. “
“No, I see myself as a Dane and I also play for the Danish U21 national team. So no, I have not thought about it if I’m honest.”
This should likely to put an end to recent country row, but Billing is yet to earn his first cap for Denmark’s senior team.
