Last week, in the most recent update we’ve seen regarding West Ham United’s chase for São Paulo defender Luizão, it was claimed the Hammers had cooled down their interest in the player.
It was reported by Jovem Pan that with the London side now not looking so keen on the signing, the player is actually expected to receive an offer from Greek club Olympiacos.
Despite that, West Ham are continuing to be credited with interest in Luizão, and there’s an open path for them to get him from São Paulo in January.
That’s because his contract with the Brazilian club is about to expire, and as now admitted by manager Rogério Ceni, he’s very likely to leave them for free before the start of the 2023 season in Brazil.
“I talk to them, but they always say it’s an agent thing. Football has changed a lot. In my time, I was the one who decided about my career. The world changed, my perception is that he will not stay.”
Luizão’s contract with São Paulo expires at the end of January. Gazeta Esportiva, who bring the quotes, name West Ham as one of the clubs who are interested in him, along with the likes of Fulham and Benfica.
So there’s certainly a lot more to come before he chooses the club he’ll play for.
