Juan Mata came close to leaving Manchester United as a free agent last summer, but the speculation around his future was put to bed when he signed a new contract in June 2019.

The attacking midfielder’s current deal lasts until 2021 and the Red Devils retain an option to further extend it by a year.

Despite signing a new deal in 2019, the Spaniard saw his playing time limited in the league and had to settle for more minutes in the cup competitions last season.

The 32-year-old’s situation hasn’t improved this term as he hasn’t made an appearance in the Premier League. However, he did manage to impress in the two EFL Cup matches, where he registered an assist and scored two goals.

According to Sport, an unnamed club from Saudi Arabia ‘failed to seduce’ the former Chelsea star to join them. The club’s first proposal included an annual salary of €16m.

He rejected it and they returned with a second offer worth €20m per year. However, Mata didn’t change his stance and said no to the second proposal.

Mata wasn’t part of the United side that suffered a 6-1 crushing defeat against Tottenham Hotspur days before the window closed.

Sport states the ‘hard setback’ suffered at hands of Spurs has not made the playmaker ‘change his mind’ about leaving Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side.

Mata prefers to compete at the highest level rather than accept a lucrative offer from the Middle East. He can achieve the former by continuing at United.
