Griezmann, United fan? Just spit it out Antoine
“It’s true that one day, playing in the same club as Paul, that would be the best.”
Those were the words of a certain Antoine Griezmann, speaking about one of his best friends, Manchester United’s Paul Pogba, while speaking on international duty to Sky Sports in Germany.
The Atlético Madrid star, who was recently on the wrong end of a 3-0 thumping at the hands of Cristiano Ronaldo’s Real Madrid, has become one of the world’s biggest football stars over the course of his time under Diego Simeone.
Interviewed by L’Equipe Magazine this week, the Frenchman admitted that one of his biggest idols in football was David Beckham, a man he is fascinated by.
He said: “Beckham has always been my idol, and still is. The other day, on TV, I ended up watching a documentary on his career. I couldn’t look away, just in awe of what he managed to do on the pitch and in his other lives.”
The player was also asked, comparing his idolising of Beckham, he would idolise Cristiano Ronaldo were he a young football player these days, Griezmann also had other players in mind.
He said: “I think I’d be a fan of Messi, Ronaldo, Neymar but also Paul, of course. Pogba is a player we see a lot, and someone who shines on the pitch and off it.”
Never openly admitting he is a Manchester United fan, the Atlético Madrid star has always appeared to have an underlying fascination for the Premier League giants, as he let slip in a 2013 interview with Marca.
Asked if he’d ever been to Old Trafford at that stage, he then replied: “Yes, as a fan at Christmas last year to see Manchester United-Newcastle. It was a surprise trip for my brother, who is a big fan of United.”
Makes you think, doesn’t it?
Maybe that’s been Ed Woodward’s plan all along? Bring back Pogba (#Pogback), only for Griezmann (#GriezLightning/#GriezTheMann) to follow him the next summer?
Just imagine the Twitter announcement… Drake in a Manchester United shirt, Hotline Bling playing, and who walks in? You guessed it.
