Empoli president Fabrizio Corsi has shared his delight at the sale of Guglielmo Vicario to Tottenham, a deal which would have been ‘unthinkable’ for the Italian side 10 years ago.

Corsi has been speaking to TuttoMercatoWeb regarding the transfer, which was finally completed yesterday following weeks of speculation about a move.

Vicario has joined Spurs in a €20m deal as the long-term replacement for Hugo Lloris, who is expected to leave the club at some point this summer.

The move is the biggest of his career so far, having previously cost €500, €2m, and then €8.5m when he joined Empoli from Cagliari Calcio last summer.

It also means he is now Empoli’s record purchase and record sale, with the €20m Tottenham have paid eclipsing the previous record for a player sale, which was Ismaël Bennacer’s €17.2m move to AC Milan in 2019.

Corsi is certainly happy with the deal he’s gotten, hailing Tottenham and explaining how the money they’ve received will help the club moving forwards.

“Apart from the great satisfaction of being able to sell to one of the most prestigious and important clubs in English football, which is a reference at every level, we are talking about a footballer and a phenomenal person,” he said.

“We said goodbye today (Wednesday) and I reiterated my compliments to his parents for the great work.

“The operation gives Empoli a great boost and international image: it was unthinkable 20 years ago, even 10, making transfers of this type.

“The step goes further and also applies to the knowledge of our reality. Now all our young people have had proof that they know us abroad as well.

“Because we, in addition to making them grow, launch them, even taking the necessary risks.”
