Swindon Town forward Jon Obika has revealed he needed to leave Tottenham Hotspur for the sake of his career. The 26-year-old joined Swindon Town in 2014 after eight years at Tottenham.

Speaking to FourFourTwo (subscribe here), Obika said he realised he wasn’t going to get many games whilst he was at Tottenham, but was still sure he could make a living playing football. The forward believed it was time to leave the Premier League side after coming through their youth system, and when Swindon Town came in for him he jumped at the chance to join them.

“I knew I probably wasn’t going to get a run of games, but I was confident that I could make it. I just needed something to click when I got the chance. I wanted to settle down so I think was ready. I was at the point in my life where I was ready to move on, and Swindon fitted the bill,” said the former Tottenham midfielder.

Obika became a Tottenham senior player in 2008 after two years in the academy, but made just a handful of appearances for the North London club. During his time at White Hart Lane, Obika had a number of loan spells with various clubs before his permanent transfer to Swindon Town.
