Over the past few days, you might have seen a few articles floating around in the English press regarding an Everton interest in Saint-Etienne defender Léo Lacroix, currently on loan at FC Basel.

They weren’t wrong, as Le Matin in Switzerland have now confirmed this news, and give a lot more information about what’s going on behind the scenes.

According to the newspaper, Everton have recently contacted the player’s entourage, and are pushing ‘quite hard’ to get something done.

Having failed to convince at Saint-Etienne, the defender’s time at Basel has allowed him to showcase his ability, demonstrating his qualities on the biggest of stages in a Champions League tie against Manchester City, during which he impressed.

For the Ligue 1 side, this represents a great opportunity to cash in on a player they aren’t all that keen on, and Everton are reported to be willing to pay just under £7m for the 26-year-old.

Steven Walsh, Everton’s director of football, is said to have ‘multiplied the contacts’ to try and get something done.

Down the player’s end, Lacroix is ‘aware his physical qualities would adapt to English football’, and ‘isn’t against the idea of a transfer’.
