Andreas Samaris. Here’s a player who was much wanted back in the summer, with West Brom and Newcastle United interest being widely reported in Portugal. And after a few months of silence, he’s back to the transfer rumour mill once again.
In the past weeks, we’ve covered a couple of stories saying the Magpies and the Baggies have both watched the midfielder in Lisbon, and the reaction from the Portuguese press was that these clubs were even considering a bid for him, something that sounded a little over the top.
We’d already pointed out that West Brom had an opportunity to move again, after they reportedly nearly signed Samaris for €20m in the summer, and then things got slightly carried away.
Things continue to grow, and Diário de Notícias claims Samaris has an offer from England. The newspaper makes a list of the players who could be leaving the Estádio da Luz in the winter window, and Samaris is one of them, as he could ‘move to English football’.
They don’t make clear which club would be taking him from Benfica, and it’s curious how they don’t even give much importance to the transfer, making him just one more player who could be transferred.
Samaris had a bigger role in the team in the summer window, but now it’s becoming quite clear his departure from the Lisbon side wouldn’t be groundbreaking, with recent reports claiming that his price has dropped considerably.
But the possible winner of this race still remains a mistery. It seems it’s just a matter of West Brom or Newcastle dropping an offer of just over €10m, and whoever does it first will end up taking him.
