Unless you’ve been living under a rock the past few years, you’ll be aware that Tottenham’s Steven Bergwijn is a target for Ajax Amsterdam.

They were interested last summer, tried again to sign him in January, and there’s little that’s changed to suggest they won’t give it another go in the summer.

That’s regardless of Erik ten Hag’s departure for the Premier League, as De Telegraaf journalist Mike Verweij explained in a chat on the Kick-Off Football podcast.

Talking about the fact Tottenham refused the chance to sell Bergwijn for less than their asking price in January, he makes it clear the player remains keen on a move away from Spurs because of his desire to play more ahead of the World Cup.

Ajax remains a prime destination for the Dutchman, and Verweij said, relayed by Voetbal Primeur: “That door has never been closed. There was talk last winter and since, there has always been a little feeling with him.”

However, the priority at the Amsterdam side, before deciding whether or not to make another attempt for the Tottenham man, is their new manager.

Verweij added: “First, Ajax will have to determine that Alfred Schreuder will be the new manager, and only then will there be a discussion about filling in the position.”

With Bergwijn hardly playing under Antonio Conte at Tottenham, there will likely be a chance to sign the Netherlands International in the summer, as long as the right amount of money is put forward.
