Club Brugge goalkeeper Simon Mignolet has admitted that Jurgen Klopp’s desire to rotate his goalkeepers ruined his time at Liverpool.
The Belgian goalkeeper joined Liverpool in 2013 and spent six years at the club before moving to Brugge in 2019.
He had been number one under Brendan Rodgers but was quickly replaced when Jurgen Klopp brought Loris Karius to the club.
The pair ended up being rotated by the Liverpool boss, both fighting for the number one spot but never being able to nail it down.
Alisson established himself as the main man when he arrived from Roma, with Mignolet electing to return to his homeland in 2019 for regular first team football.
He’s been the star of the show for the Belgian side since, and has been earning rave reviews for his performances, with another impressive one against Atlético Madrid in the Champions League this week.
That has led to criticism of how he was treated at Anfield and Mignolet has admitted he didn’t enjoy the setup personally.
“Indeed, I am not a fan of it,” he told De Morgen when asked about goalkeepers not liking rotations.
“For us, it is better to play many matches, to make sure you are ready time after time. If you get taken out week by week, you lose your rhythm.
“I don’t think something like that is ideal. I experienced it at the time at Liverpool with Jurgen Klopp and Loris Karius.
“I was playing one week, not the other. That doesn’t work. A goalkeeper has to be a point of rest.”
