In September, Watford sporting director Gianluca Nani insisted he had his eyes on the winter market, after reviewing the Hornets’ transfer business in the summer 2024.

The Italian is currently also technical director at Udinese, a club also owned by the Pozzo family.

TuttoMercatoWeb have had a chat with Nani to review the last calendar year.

Watford are eighth in the table with 37 points, trailing sixth placed West Bromwich Albion by two points and three behind fifth placed Middlesbrough. The 62-year-old is pleased with the work carried out by Tom Cleverley at Vicarage Road this season.

He mentioned this when asked what sort of year Watford have had.

“For Watford, the second part of the season [year] has been positive, we are in the play-off zone and playing for the big Premier League card [promotion],” he said.

At the start of the season, the sporting director was hopeful of avoiding movement in the January window but doesn’t share the same view now.

TMW asked the Italian what sort of market Watford and the Serie A side will have in this window, and when responding to that he talked about out the Pozzo family’s philosophy.

“I expect a few players to go and play, both from Udinese and Watford. Then the philosophy of the Pozzo family requires us to anticipate the competition and so we are working for June,” Nani explained.
