A few days ago French newspaper L’Equipe reported that Red Bull Leipzig ‘despite a lower status’ had managed to beat Tottenham and Juventus to a transfer because they were ‘faster and more persuasive’.

The footballer in question was Jean-Kévin Augustin, a 20 year old striker from PSG, and whilst the situation reflected well on Leipzig, it didn’t look too good for Tottenham or Juventus and their powers of persuasion.

However, then came claims of Augustin only signing for Leipzig because he received a €1m bonus and, more controversially, a guarantee of a starting place. It was obvious that Leipzig would be able to give Augustin more game time than Tottenham or Juventus, but that being guaranteed has caused a fuss.

Bild have spoken to Leipzig’s Ralf Rangnick, who told them: “Of course this isn’t true! With us a lot is imagined, but there’s no guarantee for any player. We are exactly the right club for him, he is the right player for us. Now we’ll give him the time to get used to it.”

Of course, he would say that wouldn’t he.

Bild reiterate that Tottenham and Juventus were keen, and add Fiorentina and Borussia Dortmund to the list.
