Linked for a while with a move for Pepe Reina, an old Rafa Benitez favourite, Newcastle appear to be looking at goalkeepers for next season.
With Matz Sels returning to Belgium on loan to Anderlecht, that leaves Karl Darlow, Tim Krul and Rob Elliot as options for the Spaniard.
Considering the Dutchman spent last season on loan at AZ, we doubt he’ll fall back into Benitez’s plans anytime soon, so someone with quality and hopefully room to improve could be brought in.
That is what France Football are hinting at in their weekly magazine on Monday, claiming that Newcastle are looking at potentially signing Alphonse Aréola from Paris Saint-Germain.
Starting off as the French club’s number two goalkeeper last year, the 24-year-old had a 15 game start streak midway through the season, but eventually returned to the bench for the back end of the campaign as Unai Emery struggled to make his mind up between Aréola and Kevin Trapp.
According to the magazine, Rafael Benitez has been a big fan of the French goalkeeper since his good season on loan at Villarreal two years ago, and Newcastle would be prepared to make a first offer of around €15m.
With two years left on his contract and no guarantee that he’ll be Emery’s number one next year, this might be a decent deal for Paris Saint-Germain, and one they might consider.
One to keep an eye on.
