Tottenham Hotspur tried, and failed, to sign Jean-Kévin Augustin, report L’Equipe in their Saturday edition. The 20 year old striker has joined RB Leipzig from PSG, and it’s considered quite a coup for the German club.
Mauricio Pochettino’s side weren’t the only more prestigious club than Leipzig in the mix, with Juventus said to be keen too. L’Equipe say Tottenham wanted to pay €10m for L’Equipe, and the French newspaper add that Juventus were prepared to go as high as €12m.
Augustin has signed for Leipzig in a deal worth €13m, but it’s not the money that beat Juventus and Tottenham. Whilst those two clubs are more prestigious, L’Equipe say ‘despite a lower status’, Leipzig were ‘faster and more persuasive’ than Tottenham or Juve, and presented a better case to the player.
Whilst Augustin won’t be a guaranteed starter at RB Leipzig, he’s set to get more games than had he chosen Tottenham or Juventus over his current destination. Perhaps a wise if not obvious move for the young forward.
