Unable to find regular football under Thomas Tuchel in the same way he did with Frank Lampard as manager, Tammy Abraham decided that leaving Chelsea would be best for his career.
Arsenal were interested, as were Atalanta, but it’s eventually AS Roma, where José Mourinho is currently the manager, who won that race and acquired the 24-year-old.
Starting off strongly, the England international then struggled with a dip in form, which has seen him score just four goals in 15 league appearances so far this season.
This has led to a few questions being asked about the investment, with Gazzetta dello Sport looking at the decisions made in the summer in the wake of the club’s recent 3-0 home defeat to Inter.
When reaching Abraham, they point out that ‘he has it all’, meaning his physique, technique and speed, but ‘the only “defect”’, as they put it, ‘is the price: €40m for a backup at Chelsea’.
That’s when they put forward the question of: ‘Are we sure that at that figure and with that salary (€4m/year plus easy bonuses), we couldn’t find better?’
At this point, Chelsea won’t care, having agreed to receive the money for a player Tuchel was happy to do without, but it certainly puts Roma in a questionable light, especially after Mourinho was adamant he would get the best out of Abraham.
