On May 25th, we covered claims from Spain that Manchester United were ‘willing to pay’ €20-30m for Junior Firpo.
It was reported the Premier League club are going ‘strongly’ for the Real Betis fullback.
The claims, carried by two independent reporters in Seville, looked like they’d come straight from the La Liga club. It was at that time, and in the same stories, that Tottenham interest in Giovani Lo Celso was first pushed strongly.
AS said United were ‘willing to pay’ €25-30m for the player.
Diario de Sevilla had it differently, claiming Manchester United had ‘taken the lead’, and were willing to offer more than €20m. It was further stated the club have ‘entered strongly… although with a smaller amount than initially talked about’, which could explain the difference between the two figures.
That’s prompted Marca to bring Manchester United back in, saying Betis will not ‘put up any problems’ as long as the transfer leaves ‘a good sum of money’.
Betis are also tempted by a sale to the Premier League, because the window in England’s top flight closes on August 8th, giving them a few weeks to ‘reinvest’ the money.
The Liverpool claims suggested a possibility of paying the €50m clause, but that probably won’t be necessary.
If Manchester United are looking for some competition at left back then there are certainly worse options than the 22 year old.
