Santos Laguna president Dante Elizalde has revealed they are still waiting to receive documents from Newcastle United for striker Santiago Muñoz.
Muñoz returned to the Mexican side at the end of last month following an unsuccessful loan spell with Newcastle over the last 18 months.
He joined the Magpies on loan in August 2021 and went into their Under 23 set up but was unable to make an impression in the North East, managing just nine appearances for Newcastle’s U21s and 462 minutes in total.
That led to Newcastle to pass up the opportunity to sign the 20-year-old on a permanent basis and he was sent back to Santos Laguna at the end of last month.
Their technical director Eduardo Fentanes has since admitted that the youngster will need to be medically assessed before the club can decide what to do with him moving forwards.
“Santi is with us, he is undergoing all the medical examinations, he will be in a process of rehabilitation and readaptation,” Marca report him saying.
“He arrived injured, on 21 December he received treatment, it wasn’t an operation, he has a groin injury and we are rehabilitating him in terms of sporting matters.
“We are waiting for the English club to release the ITC (International Transfer Certificate) and send us the medical file and the fulfilment of a specific procedure that we have not received, that is the situation of Santiago Muñoz.”
