Toby Alderweireld hasn’t represented a Belgian club so far in his playing career.
In October, the Tottenham Hotspur defender’s father and brother discussed the possibility of the 32-year-old finishing his career in Antwerp.
Earlier this year, reports in Belgium stated Club Brugge are interested in the centre-back and will take the help of Simon Mignolet to convince him to leave Spurs.
Voetbal24 states it’s been known the Jupiler Pro League side have a ‘crush’ on José Mourinho’s man.
Their interest stems from the fact the ex-Southampton man had previously suggested he wants to finish his career in his home country. This ‘sounds like music’ to Bart Verhaeghe’s [Club Brugge president] ears, who would welcome the Tottenham defender with ‘open arms’ to the club.
It’s claimed ‘first contact’ has already been made and they are waiting to see what Alderweireld plans to do. It’s not clear whether he wants to continue at the north London club or move to another team outside Belgium or return to his country in the summer.
If the player’s future plans include returning to Belgium, Club Brugge will be ‘ready to strike’ as they don’t want to let him join Royal Antwerp.
Antwerp owner Paul Gheysens is Verhaeghe’s business rival and the Club Brugge chief doesn’t want to see Alderweireld end up in Antwerp at any cost.
It won’t be a ‘cheap operation’ and Club Brugge are ready to make a ‘significant effort’ to close the deal for the Spurs central defender, if he becomes available.
