Çağlar Söyüncü has less than six months left on his deal and his long-term future could be away from Leicester City.
Earlier reports from Spain indicated that he is expected to join Atlético Madrid as a free agent next summer.
AS now explain the La Liga side ‘want’ the centre-back in the winter market and his name is first on the list to bolster their defence.
As of January 1st, the Turkey international is allowed to negotiate with other clubs with a view to joining them for free after this season. The newspaper states Diego Simeone’s side are ‘in pole position’ to secure his services.
The Foxes man was at Altınordu FK between 2014 and 2016, where he played under the orders of Hüseyin Eroğlu. Söyüncü’s former manager has told AS the player is ready to join the Madrid club.
“It seems that now he can sign for the Rojiblanco club and he has all the potential to play in La Liga, also at the highest level such as the Premier League. Söyüncü could give a great performance in any team in Europe,” Eroğlu said.
“He has everything a central defender should have. He is very strong in the air, he has a great ball output, he always fights and is a winner one on one. He is very agile with the ball. I have seen him improve a lot. Now he is already a player of international class.”
Söyüncü has found his game time restricted at Leicester, making only two appearances this season. A move away from Brendan Rodgers’ side in January could help him enjoy more minutes.
“Çağlar has shown that he is a talented player in a league of the highest level such as the Premier League. Now he is in a new process. At Leicester he is not getting the minutes he would like, but that is not related to his performance. Çağlar continues to show, to the extent that he can play, his best version,” Eroğlu explained.
