On March 8th, Jornal de Notícias reported Aston Villa were monitoring Pedro Gonçalves’ recovery and could make an approach in the summer window.

The Sporting player suffered a muscle injury in November and was sidelined for 150 days before regaining full fitness earlier this month.

Since returning from injury, Gonçalves has made three appearances and Aston Villa remain interested in him.

That’s according to Thursday’s edition of A Bola, which states Unai Emery’s side are keen on bringing him to the Premier League in the next window.

As well as Aston Villa, Bayer Leverkusen are interested in the 26-year-old, and they had seen their €30m bid rejected by the Lions. The newspaper makes no mention of when the Bundesliga tabled the proposal.

The Lisbon club aren’t considering sanctioning the Portugal international’s sale. There’s been no conversations about a transfer because they want to extend the Aston Villa target’s contract beyond 2027.

Gonçalves’ immediate focus is to regain his best form quickly and be decisive to help the club win the title this season. Sporting are leading the table and are level on points with second placed Benfica.

Therefore, formal talks regarding the player’s renewal have been postponed until the end of the season.

This can provide Aston Villa a window to try and convince him to join them. That won’t be easy for the Villans considering the attacker is ‘very happy and motivated’ at Sporting.
