As Genoa look to sign a centre-back by the end of the transfer window, we saw this week them being linked to Celtic’s Gustaf Lagerbielke.

It had been said that the Serie A side have been trying to ‘speed up the operation’ to sign the Celtic player, as they have a ‘very open channel’ with Brendan Rodgers’ player.

It turns out that, as Gianluca Di Marzio today covers Genoa’s latest operations, it’s said the club are signing a central defender who’s not the Celtic player.

The story claims Giorgio Cittadini is joining from Monza. He’s arriving on a loan deal with a right for redemption.

The deal seems pretty much done, as the player is arriving in Genoa for his medical and should soon sign his contract with the club.

Both Cittadini and Lagerbielke are right-footed central defenders, so we now wonder whether Genoa are going after multiple options or if this operation means the chase for the Celtic player failed.

In case the Hoops were pushing for a sale, then it’s possible that the Serie A side found a cheaper deal by landing Cittadini on an initial loan deal.
