Manchester United have not yet fully sorted out their central defensive options despite signing Raphael Varane from Real Madrid in the summer transfer window.
The club were again shaky at the back on Saturday as they threw away a 2-0 lead away at Aston Villa, seeing their three points quickly turned into just one.
Catalan newspaper Sport reports the Red Devils have an eye on Ronald Araujo, who is going through a renewal process with Barcelona.
Despite being in the first team, the defender still has a contract from the club’s subsidiary side, and is clearly looking for a big pay rise.
Barcelona are said to ‘know first hand’ that Premier League clubs, including Manchester United, have called the player.
They would be testing the ground for a transfer in the summer window, when Araujo will have less than a year left on his contract should he not renew.
Araujo wants to stay at the Camp Nou, but he and his agent simply won’t accept a renewal which places him far below the salary level of some of his teammates of similar age.
