Surprising many by spending £22m on André Frank Zambo Anguissa late last summer, Fulham placed a lot of expectations on a young midfielder who showed promise at Marseille but was far from the finished product.

That translated to a fairly bad season for the 23-year-old, who was unable to help the Cottagers avoid relegation, and is now an expensive asset sitting in a team who can’t really afford to keep him around.

Thankfully, Villarreal have come to the rescue, as AS in Spain believe the Cameroon international is ‘close to signing’ for the La Liga club, where he would team up with national teammate Karl Toko Ekambi.

It’s believed the Spaniards could announce his arrival ‘in the next few days’, although there’s no indication as to what the deal entails.

However, the constant mention of ‘fichaje’ suggests a permanent deal, as do the last lines of the article.

AS explain that even with Villarreal making Zambo-Anguissa their main target, having done so for a few weeks now, his signing ‘will be one of those complicated operations for which there has been a big need to negotiate’.

Again, there’s no details about the potential fee Villarreal will pay, so we’ll have to wait for more on that part too.

He’s ‘close to signing’, though, so there’s that.
