Long before joining Wolverhampton Wanderers last year, Julen Lopetegui once managed Porto for a couple of seasons.
The coach had a record of 53 wins in 78 games in charge of the Dragons, but wasn’t able to win any titles for the club.
It turns out his time with Porto was now recalled by midfielder Sérgio Oliveira, who has been speaking to fans on Instagram today.
The player was asked how he got to know his wife, and claimed the Wolves boss actually played a part, since it was because of him that the he would only stay in the stands at that time.
“I met my wife at Estádio do Dragão. Thanks to Lopetegui who always left me in the stands. Best thing ever. I was close to inviting him to be best man,” said Sérgio Oliveira on Instagram (via Record).
When Lopetegui took charge of Porto, Oliveira had been on loan at Paços Ferreira. The following summer, the midfielder was called back to the Dragons’ squad, but was barely used by the manager until was got sacked from the job. Curiously, once the Spaniard was gone from the club, the player soon became a regular starter there.
So the coach may be far away from Porto now, but hasn’t left Oliveira’s mind. At least, that’s now for a good cause.
