The big match between Chelsea and Manchester City at the weekend had big reactions from the Brazilian media, and Thiago Silva had a word with their media after the game.
The Blues defender was interviewed by ESPN Brasil journalist João Castelo-Branco, and talked about playing at this level at the age of 39.
Silva started by insisting he works hard to continue as a top player at Chelsea, saying he gives up on many things to be the best athlete he possibly can be.
“It’s not easy. On a day-to-day basis it’s very difficult because you give up a lot to be at the top level. I’m not playing the underdog, it’s my choice. I’m very happy and proud of what I’m doing,” Thiago Silva told ESPN Brasil.
Silva also talked about facing Erling Haaland, claiming they’d have a fairer duel if the Brazilian was still in his prime.
“In a game of this intensity and marking one of the greatest strikers in the world today. He’s not just good technically, he’s good with his speed and his header. No wonder he scored two goals today. It’s very difficult to mark a player like that, especially at my age. I’d like to go back a bit to be able to play him a bit better. I realise I’m closer to the end than the beginning or the middle, but I’m very proud of everything I’m experiencing.”
Players are now going on the international break, but Silva has not been called up by the national team recently, despite showing signs he’s still available to play for Brazil.
Chelsea will soon be prepared for the upcoming Premier League challenges against Newcastle United, Brighton & Hove Albion and Manchester United.
Mauricio Pochettino’s side still stand in 10th in the table, but this performance against Manchester City should prove they can compete with the top teams.
