If Chelsea are spending some millions on the signing of a 16-year-old Ecuadorian player, that’s because he’s shown huge potential as a teenager.

Kendry Paez recently got his first call up for the national team, and is now set to break some records if making his debut in this international break.

The midfielder was today interviewed by Canal del Futbol, relayed by ESPN Deportes, and talked about the chance of making such an early appearance for Ecuador.

“Very happy to share with very top players, players from Europe. I’m very happy to be called up. At this age, it’s something spectacular in my career,” said the future Chelsea player.

In case Paez does enter the pitch in the matches against Argentina and Uruguay, then he’s set to be the youngest South American to play for a national team. That record is currently held by football legend Diego Maradona.

“Yes, I’m excited. I’m going to be training to see if they give me the confidence to make my debut, play some minutes and give my best. To be able to break the record.”

Paez can’t move to Europe until he turns 18, so he still has while before he leaves Independiente Del Valle to join Chelsea, and he’s set to only complete his move in the summer of 2025.

Playing for the Ecuadorian club, he only has 17 official appearances, but that was apparently enough to give him the chance to represent his country for the first time in his very young career.
