With the Enzo Fernández deal seemingly slowly falling apart, it appears Chelsea are turning to other objectives to bolster their midfield.

Among those they have tried, according to TuttoMercatoWeb, is Nicolò Barella, an old acquaintance of theirs as they tried to sign him from Cagliari a few years ago.

The midfielder is one of the big stars at Inter, and certainly not one of the players they would let leave to Chelsea in the middle of the season, and that’s why their answer wasn’t surprising.

The Italian website make it clear the Blues received a ‘flat no’ from the Serie A side after they ‘evaluated the sensational’ idea of trying to sign the Italy international.

Chelsea ‘probed the willingness’ of Inter to sell their player, but were met with a ‘resounding no’ from Beppe Marotta and Piero Ausilio.

The 25-year-old is an integral part of Simone Inzaghi’s plans at San Siro, and despite the Serie A side needing money before the end of the season, it’s been made clear Denzel Dumfries will likely be the one to help that money come in.

Barella has made 25 appearances in all competitions this season, scored six goals and assisted another seven, which is exactly why Chelsea wanted him and exactly why Inter said no.
