Last summer, Chelsea tried to sign Jules Koundé from Sevilla, perhaps knowing they would potentially be losing a number of centre-backs this summer.
The likes of Antonio Rüdiger and Andreas Christensen appear reluctant to extend with the Stamford Bridge side going forward, and with their contracts expiring in the summer, they are currently free to discuss with other clubs a change of scenery for no transfer fee.
There’s been reports that such talks have been taking place, meaning Chelsea will likely need to spend on defenders in the coming months, with Koundé still top of their list.
This comes from Marca in Spain, who recall the France international ‘came very close to leaving in the summer’, but ‘no agreement was reached’ in the end.
That being said, Chelsea, this time around, ‘have decided that the French defender will have a change of scenery’ this summer and are ‘willing to do the rest’.
It’s made clear they ‘do not give up’, fully ‘convinced that this time, they will not fail’.
This means putting enough money on the table to convince Sevilla, most likely by triggering his release clause, as well as offering the player a contract worthy of his starting spot at a top Premier League club, who currently are the reigning Champions League winners.
We’ll have to see whether this happens, but it appears the Blues are determined, and when that’s the case, they tend to get what they want.
