Xavier Mbuyamba left second division Dutch club MVV Maastricht and completed a switch to Barcelona on Monday… but he could have ended up at Celtic Park instead.
Earlier in May, the 17-year-old’s agent Carlos Barros backed Chelsea to acquire the defender’s services after suggesting the Blues had the “best credentials” to sign his client.
There were other clubs interested in the youngster and Voetbal International claims Celtic were one of those chasing the centre-back.
Apart from the Bhoys, FC Porto, Liverpool and Bayern Munich were ‘interested’ in the teenager. However, the report states Mbuyamba ‘preferred’ the La Liga winners over other suitors.
The Dutchman made his debut with MVV at the age of 16 and made 11 appearances last season. According to Nrc.nl, there were frequently scouts watching his performances.
MVV made a contract offer to Mbuyamba, but the latter turned it down. He’s left the Dutch club as a free agent and MVV will receive a training allowance as part of the deal.
The likes of Celtic, Liverpool and other clubs who were interested in Mbuyamba are left disappointed after he decided to join Barcelona.
