According to Greek website Sdna.Gr, Bundesliga club Mainz are set to rival Celtic for AEK’s goalkeeper Vasilios Barkas.
In recent weeks we’ve covered reports from Greece that Barkas is a target for the Scottish Premiership giants following claims Neil Lennon is looking to bring in a goalkeeper next summer.
It’s now reported by Sdna.Gr that Barkas is also a target for Mainz and the German club have contacted intermediaries about getting a deal done for the Greek international.
Should Celtic want to replace Fraser Forster then they may have to act quickly due to the interest from Mainz. Forster is currently on loan with the Scottish champions from Southampton.
Previous reports say AEK value Barkas in the region of €7m and that Celtic sporting director Nick Hammond is hoping his connections in Greece could help land the 25 year old.
Barkas’ contract with Athens club will expire at the end of June 2022.
