Since last summer, when Lucas Moura entered his final year of contract with Tottenham Hotspur, the Brazilian media had countless stories about the player’s potential return to São Paulo.

It’s fair to say those rumours were fed by the footballer himself, who many times teased about the possibility of moving back to his former club.

Now with reports this week confirming that Lucas is leaving Tottenham at the end of the season, that only increased the number of stories in Brazil, as this is the chance for São Paulo to sign him for free.

Despite the excitement from many of the club’s fans, manager Rogério Ceni made sure to completely turn down that rumour in a press conference today. When speaking of the attacker, who used to be his teammate during his time as a player, he made it clear that the 30-year-old should continue in Europe.

“We have to stop deceiving the fans. He doesn’t come to São Paulo now, he should earn a fortune at Tottenham. I would love to have Lucas here, he would have a captain’s armband and be starter on the right wing,”
said Rogério Ceni (via Globo Esporte).

“Lucas will have a great opportunity to be free on the market. He won’t come to São Paulo, we can’t fool the fans. It’s even an unnecessary pressure on the boy, an exceptional boy. Lucas Moura will not be at São Paulo in the coming years. I believe he’ll come to say goodbye, but this is not the time. It’s time for him to make the rest of his life in the European market. We should close this case.”

Lucas Moura seems to have some market in Europe, so it’s actually no surprise to see him postponing his return to Brazil. Now with a few months on his contract with Tottenham, he must do well to attract interest from good teams.
