West Ham United have reportedly made an attempt to sign the Palmeiras defender Gustavo Gomez in the summer.
The information is brought today by journalist Jorge Nicola. On his Yahoo blog, he says the Brazilian club rejected two offers for the player.
It’s claimed that one of these bids came from the Hammers, who wanted to pay €18m for the signing. The other one was made by Mexican side Monterey, who offered €15m.
Palmeiras recently used their buying option to sign Gomez from Milan in a €6m deal, so accepting West Ham’s offer would mean a big and quick profit for the club.
However, the São Paulo side believed they could fight for big titles this year, and decided to keep the player. The plan didn’t work out very well, since they’ve now been eliminated from the Copa do Brasil and the Copa Libertadores.
This isn’t the first time Gustavo Gomez is linked to a London side, as in the summer, Crystal Palace were said to be scouting him as well.
