When the first murmurs of Islam Slimani’s unhappiness at Leicester City appeared in the Algerian media, our first thought was “Everton could really do with him”.

The Toffees haven’t found a replacement for Romelu Lukaku yet, as Wayne Rooney continues to show his age, and the Foxes’ striker certainly fits the target man role the Belgian star thrived in at Goodison Park.

Watford and Crystal Palace were also said to be interested, although Christian Benteke’s return for the Eagles might put an end to that, but it’s at Everton that Slimani’s future makes the most sense.

Another candidate appeared out of the blue, and that was Rennes in Ligue 1, who saw the forward’s nightmare as an opportunity to potentially pull off a coup, most likely in the shape of a loan, but Compétition in Algeria have now put an end to that, providing Everton a boost in the process.

The website claim Slimani wants to stay in England, having made success in the Premier League one of his main career goals.

His failure to convince Claude Puel at King Power Stadium and desire to remain on this side of the Channel makes Everton, where he would have little to no competition, unlike Watford, the most logical destination for a January move.
