Portuguese newspaper A Bola link Newcastle United with William Carvalho again this weekend, and it’s becoming a transfer rumour which keeps popping up.

On May 24th we covered claims from Portugal that Newcastle and West Brom are now favourites to sign the Sporting midfielder, and those claims were twisted by the British media.

Carvalho’s buyout clause is €45m and the whole thing was twisted into Newcastle United being prepared to pay a ‘stunning’ £39m, which we pointed out was quite clearly nonsense.

Scrubbing all of that, the claims of interest were still there in Portugal, and are again. A Bola say Rafael Benitez ‘wants to construct a team’ good enough to make sure that Newcastle won’t struggle next season.

The last thing the Spaniard wants is to spend a season trying to keep his club’s head above the bottom three. Targeting footballers the calibre of Euro 2016 winner Carvalho is a way to go about that.

A Bola say Sporting will listen to interesting offers.
