Across the Catalan media on Thursday were claims that Ramon Planes has asked to leave Barcelona.
Planes has held several director-style roles at the Camp Nou since arriving at the club in 2018. He helps oversee the management of the club’s football structure, and according to the Thursday reports he’s been pleasing those above him, including president Joan Laporta.
Laporta turfed out several in the Barcelona structure when he won the presidential election, and that Planes wasn’t among them was a seal of approval in itself. Wanting to leave the club quickly, it was explained Planes had a desire to consider offers he already has and those expected to arrive.
Sport now report one of those offers is from somewhere pretty close to home… Barcelona’s local La Liga rivals Espanyol.
The rivalry is a longstanding one, and whilst it may not rise to the levels of El Clasico for Barca fans, it’s certainly the biggest game of the season for Espanyol.
Planes has worked at Espanyol previously, and clearly left a good memory at the club. Contacts are said to be in place, but it’s not the only offer on the table, although the other clubs haven’t been named at this stage.
It would not be a surprise to see Premier League clubs linked with Planes, with Newcastle United the obvious option, however, it may be that he wants to stay locally, given that he’s from Catalonia.
