Aston Villa are one of a handful of clubs who have been repeatedly linked to Joan García in recent weeks, despite the Birmingham club not having an obvious need for the Espanyol goalkeeper.

Emi Martinez is the number one for Unai Emery’s side, and therefore bringing in such a highly rated goalkeeper would look like something of a luxury and surely neither man would want to sit on the bench.

Many in Spain believe Joan García will be the national team stopper in the not too distant future, even if the 23-year-old is yet to be chosen at such a level.

Aston Villa were again linked on Wednesday, as Real Madrid were dragged further into the picture.

Radio Marca now have a fresh slant on the situation. They state there’s a possibly Espanyol could even sell Joan García for less than his clause.

That clause currently stands at €25m, and Radio Marca suggest €20m as a possible fee. That’s because the Barcelona club really need to bring in some funds when the window opens so the feeling is they could be forced to compromise.

That would certainly be a surprise, and perhaps their second suggestion is likelier. A club could buy Joan García and loan him back to Espanyol for another season.

For clubs such as Aston Villa and Real Madrid, who don’t have a big need for a new first choice this summer, they may be a possibility. And such a scenario could then be used to achieve that €5m discount which Radio Marca edge forward.
