On November 10th, we covered a report from Spain which stated Wolves manager Julen Lopetegui was keen on signing Nacho Fernandez from Real Madrid.

That was followed up in the Spanish media a week later, with the gist being that interest in Nacho was growing but he was giving priority to remaining with Los Blancos.

On December 6th, further claims from the country dragged Aston Villa into the picture, explaining that Unai Emery was keen on the defender and considering pushing his club to make a move for Nacho.

Sunday’s edition of AS brings the latest on the 33-year-old’s situation. According to the Spanish newspaper, Nacho is ‘at a crossroads’ in his career and decision time is coming soon.

Without specifically naming either Wolves or Aston Villa, AS make it clear there’s growing interest from the Premier League, with clubs ‘back on the attack’ ahead of the player becoming a free agent.

Real Madrid will offer a renewal, but likely only a one year contract. The club are said to be certain that if Nacho does leave then he’ll move abroad.

He has the opportunity to try something new, potentially with a club like Wolves or Aston Villa, or try to end his career as a ‘one club man’.

A lot will inevitably depend on the financial conditions of the offers he receives.
