In recent months the France national team has said to goodbye to multiple legends, and they’re starting a fresh era without them.

One of the players who has decided to retire from international football is Tottenham Hotspur stopper Hugo Lloris. Having also been the captain of the national team, his exit was treated as something of a big deal and he was serenaded by supporters on Friday evening ahead of his country’s victory over Sweden.

With the Tottenham man gone, there’s been two questions, who will be the France captain and who will be in-between the posts. That’s where West Ham United’s Alphonse Areola comes in.

Mike Maignan has been given the job as number one, but Sunday’s edition of L’Equipe makes clear the West Ham player is second choice and has a good chance of getting more opportunities than he did previously.

For Areola, a lot of that depends on the game time he’s getting for West Ham. L’Equipe point out he’s been starting recently following an injury to Lukasz Fabianski, and it’s also made clear that he’ll need David Moyes to continue picking him if he wants chances with France.

If not, then Brice Samba is waiting in the wings.
