Aston Villa target Pedro Gonçalves continues to have his good season at Sporting acknowledged in Portugal.

As reported by O Jogo, the 25-year-old was chosen as the league’s best midfielder in April.

He was voted by club managers as the best in his position, in the same month when Sporting guaranteed the season title.

Gonçalves has 18 goals and 16 assists in 47 appearances for the Lions this season. He can still achieve a little more, as the cup final against Porto is yet to be played.

Aston Villa have been linked to the player for a while, with the latest reports about it showing up at the end of April.

With Gonçalves protected by a €80m release clause, Sporting know they’re well protected, as they start dealing with all the interest in their players who were protagonists in their title campaign.

The Lions’ spot in the Champions League has been pointed out as an argument why many players would like to stay in Lisbon, but with Aston Villa also likely offering that, they may stand in a very favourable position to draw interest from some stars this summer.
