This summer, Aston Villa have been repeatedly linked to Sporting winger Pedro Gonçalves.

In the last story we covered about this chase, it was claimed the Lions would simply not negotiate his sale, and he’d only move if someone triggered his €80m release clause.

It turns out that now Aston Villa’s chances seem to have vanished. According to a fresh report from newspaper A Bola, Gonçalves is set to sign a new contract with Sporting.

It’s said the extension will be official in the coming days, and Pote, as he’s better known at his club, will be the best paid player in the squad.

His release clause remains the same, but since the previous reports said Aston Villa would only pay up to €45m for his transfer, it now sounds very unlikely that Unai Emery’s side would manage to reach a deal with Sporting.

One of the reasons the Lions will give no discount for him is that they only get 50% of the transfer fee, as the other half goes to his former club Famalicão.
