Marcelo Flores made his debut for Mexico on Sunday evening, as the country beat Suriname 3-0 in the CONCACAF Nations League.

The Arsenal player is only 18-years-of-age and had been the subject of desire from multiple countries, in the end choosing to represent Mexico at international level.

Mexico’s SoyFutbol report that after missing a penalty towards the end of the game, the youngster left the pitch ‘in tears’, despite the positive result, and had to be comforted by his teammates and members of the opposition.

When a Suriname player gestured about swapping shirts, Flores refused and it’s thought that’s because he wants to keep his first Mexico shirt.

Later, the Arsenal player took to social media, and said: “Learning hurts. Thanks to my teammates, coaches and for the messages that I have received. I appreciate them very much. We continue to grow together, Mexico.”

ESPN Mexico quoted manager Tata Martino saying the chance of converting the penalty had been given to Flores by his teammates, to celebrate his first appearance for the national side.

Martino went on to say: “The boy is in the locker room crying inconsolably, which makes you very sad, but he knows that this is nothing in a career, a career that he has to build, that he has a lot ahead of him, many good moments.”

The emotion of such a big evening in his career clearly got to Flores, but his reaction is helping him make his way into the hearts of Mexican football fans.
