On Friday, Luca Ercolani’s association with Manchester United came to an end after he agreed to join lower division Italian side Carpi 1909.
The Serie C club confirmed the defender’s ‘outright’ arrival from the Red Devils on their official website and revealed the player will sign a contract until 2022 after completing his medical.
Ercolani joined United’s academy from Italian side Forli following a successful trial in 2016.
Having impressed in his first two years in Manchester, the centre-back was offered a new contract in May 2018.
The youngster’s contract with the English club was set to expire at the end of this season and there’s lack of clarity on whether Carpi have compensated Manchester United or if they have taken him on a free transfer.
Ercolani was forced to have an operation after suffering a ruptured cruciate ligament in September 2019 and that kept him out of action for almost a year. He was troubled with knee injuries this season and concern over his fitness restricted the player’s development in England.
Ercolani’s agent Andrea D’Amico has explained the reason behind his client’s decision to leave United for the Serie C side.
“He wanted to experience first team football. This return is to get experience in this direction. To begin a new career path among the great,” D’Amico told TuttoMercatoWeb.
